Just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, also known as the Great Mayan Reef, it is the most extensive barrier reef system in the Western Hemisphere, and the second largest barrier reef in the world.  It stretches over 1,126 kilometres (700 mi) along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.   Diving the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is world renowned with over 500 species of fish, 60 diverse coral species, four types of sea turtles, and saltwater crocodiles.
